Spring on the South Fork means more time outside and more pests waking up or moving in. A few hours of focused work now can save you a lot of trouble later. Here is a straightforward checklist to pest proof your Hamptons home before the season gets busy.
Start With the Outside of the House
Pests get in through gaps, cracks, and openings that you can often see and fix.
Check the foundation. Walk around the base of the house and look for cracks, holes, or gaps where pipes and wires enter. Small openings are enough for mice and ants. Seal them with caulk or appropriate filler so nothing can squeeze through.
Look at vents and screens. Attic vents, crawl space vents, and basement windows should have intact screens. Replace any that are torn or missing. This helps keep rodents and insects out while still allowing air flow.
Inspect doors and windows. Weather stripping that is worn or missing lets in ants, spiders, and sometimes mice. Replace strips and make sure doors close tightly. Fix or replace damaged screens so you can open windows without inviting everything in.
Trim plants away from the house. Shrubs and branches that touch the siding or roof give pests a direct path inside. Cut them back so there is a clear gap. That also helps reduce moisture against the house, which attracts termites and other problems.
Tackle the Yard and Landscaping
What you do in the yard affects ticks, mosquitoes, and rodents.
Clear leaves and debris. Piles of leaves, mulch right against the foundation, and stacked wood give shelter to mice, ants, and ticks. Rake leaves away from the house and store firewood off the ground and away from doors.
Mow and trim the lawn. Tall grass and weedy edges are where ticks wait. Keeping the lawn mowed and trimming the border reduces tick habitat close to where you walk and play. In Southampton, East Hampton, and Sag Harbor, that is especially important because tick activity starts early in spring.
Remove or refresh standing water. Anything that holds water for more than a few days can breed mosquitoes. Empty plant saucers, tip over buckets and toys, clean gutters, and fix low spots that stay wet. For more on this, see how standing water and mosquitoes are connected.
Store garbage and food properly. Lids on cans should fit tightly. Do not leave pet food outside overnight. Reducing food and smell sources keeps rodents and wildlife from treating your yard like a buffet.
Plan for Ticks and Mosquitoes Early
On Long Island, tick and mosquito season overlaps with the best outdoor months. Scheduling treatments before you are overrun is more effective than reacting in the middle of summer.
Know when to start. Many homeowners in Montauk, Bridgehampton, and across the East End start tick control in April or early May and mosquito control as soon as temperatures and moisture support breeding. Getting on the calendar early means your property is protected when activity peaks.
Decide on coverage. If you use the property year round, you may want both tick and mosquito programs. If it is a second home, a seasonal plan that runs from spring through fall might be enough. A quick call or quote request lets our team suggest a schedule that fits how you use the property.
When to Call for Back Up
Some problems need more than DIY steps. Here is when it makes sense to bring in a pro.
You see or hear rodents. Droppings, gnaw marks, or sounds in the walls or attic usually mean mice or rats. General insect and rodent control includes inspection, sealing entry points, and treatments to get rid of them and keep them from coming back.
You have had termites or are buying or selling. Termites damage the structure of the house and often go unnoticed until the damage is serious. If you have had them before or you are in a transaction, a termite inspection gives you a clear picture and a plan.
Wildlife is under the deck or in the attic. Raccoons, skunks, and squirrels can cause damage and health risks. Wildlife control uses humane trapping and exclusion so the animals are removed and entry points are secured.
You want a set schedule. Many families and second home owners prefer a monthly or seasonal program so ants, spiders, and other pests are handled before they become a big issue. We can tailor visits to your property and your schedule.
